In “Omweg naar Huis“, choreographer and hip-hop dancer Ali Zanad goes looking for where he really comes from. Born and raised between two worlds — The Netherlands and Iraq — he feels torn in between these two. Therefore Ali sets out for Morocco, since Iraq is too dangerous, to get closer to his roots.
The documentary follows Ali as he travels, meets people, and reflects on his mixed identity. It’s not just about finding a place on the map, but about making sense of all the feelings that come with it. Along the way, he creates “Sat‘eh“, a dance piece where he processes all the emotions, questions, and discoveries from his identity search into movement and choreography.
“Omweg naar huis“, and the dance piece “Sat‘eh“, are raw and honest looks at what it means to search for yourself — and how dance can tell the stories words sometimes can’t.
